WINONA, Minn. – Legislation to replenish the state’s unemployment insurance fund has the support of the Winona Chamber of Commerce. President Christie Ransom says businesses, especially small businesses, will be hit with a tax hike if the fund isn’t replenished soon. “This would really be painful for them because this would be a really large tax increase,” Ransom said in a KWNO interview. The State Senate already has approved $2.7 billion for the fund. Governor Tim Walz favors the same amount. A House version has a slightly different wrinkle — $1 billion towards the fund and another $1 billion for frontline CoVid workers.
