WINONA, Minn. – Winona State astronomy prof Jennifer Anderson is grateful that the university has withdrawn from a complex deal that would have enabled Kwik Trip to build a super-sized store at Huff and Sarnia. Bright lights are the enemy of an astronomical observatory, like hers atop a campus building three blocks from the Kwik Trip site, Anderson said. “We need to preserve our dark skies,” Anderson said. “Building a large gas station near to the natural area of our lakes would only serve to wash out even more stars in our night sky.”
