EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – A driver whipping dangerously around a slow-moving column of cars on snow and ice-covered Highway 53 lost control and slid sideways into a man on the shoulder outside a stalled car. The speeding car bounced off and went into the barrow pit. The pedestrian, his legs mangled, was hospitalized in serious condition. There was little doubt about what happened. A dashboard web cam caught it all live. The crash was followed by more crashes as other drivers attempted to avoid the initial wreckage, some successfully, some not. The chain reaction was about 9 a.m. near the Chippewa County line.
