LA CROSSE, Wis. — The wife of La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat, Christy Kabat, pleaded not guilty to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from a kerfuffle with a motorist on a downtown street. Judge Elliot Levine accepted the plea for the record, then recused himself. Levine said it would be better if a judge from another county took over the case – a common procedure to avoid an appearance of a conflict of interest. Levine, however, did continue bond at $100. Christy Kabat confronted a driver whom she believed failed to stop for demonstrators who were protesting the George Floyd police slaying in Minneapolis. The driver responded with pepper spray, then drove off. Police say Kabat started the whole thing and even scratched an arm of the driver.
