ST. PAUL, Minn. – Just about any and all Minnesota high school graduates should be admitted to state colleges and universities, Governor Walz says. The governor’s two-year budget proposal includes a provision to bypass the traditional admissions process, which usually includes college entrance exams. The idea, said Walz, a former Mankato high school teacher, would be to show more students that college is for them. Also, he said, the change would reduce equity gaps, access gaps, and simplify sometimes byzantine and complex application hurdles. Walz didn’t go so far as to drop all academic benchmarks but wasn’t clear on what they might be.
