MADISON, Wis. – Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature are looking for new obstacles to voting. Or, as the GOP puts it, to purify the process against abuses and inspire public confidence. Television station WKOW reported obtaining drafts of a half dozen proposals, all in the name of State Senator Duey Stroebel, R-Cedarburg, as the lead sponsor. Provisions would:
> Require voters to provide proof of ID to vote absentee.
> Force people seeking “indefinite confinement” status to show proof from a medical professional.
> Limit where voters can get absentee ballots.
> Require more paperwork to vote early in-person.
Said Stroebel: “These bills are about restoring confidence in our elections, We must ensure uniformity of process and transparency of conduct so all voters, regardless of political belief, trust the final outcome.” Democrats have begun piling on against the Stroebel proposals. State Representative Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, called the proposals “blatantly anti-voter.”
