MADISON, Wis. — The state Department of Natural Resources canceled the sharp-tail grouse season to protect the population – just as it did last year. The department said that continuing studies foresee low survival probabilities for the grouse over the next 50 years. Sharp-taid grouse populations have been dwindling since the 1900s, mostly due to forests and grasslands being cleared for farming.
