PRAIRIE DU SAC – A pilot lost power approaching the Sauk Prairie airport and made an emergency landing on U.S. Highway 12. The pilot, Stephan L. Arnold, 59, of Madison, was unhurt. Nobody on the highway was hurt either, although Anthony Kirkus and wife Meg, of Wisconsin Dells, came close to being hit head-on. Kirkus said the single-engine high-wing red Cessna 172b was heading right for his windshield after missing a set of wires. The landing was about 12:30 p.m. near the Highway 12 intersection with County Road Z. Arnold restored power after the landing and attempted to take off but hit a road sign, crossed the median, and same to rest on the east side of U.S. 12 next to Sauk Prairie Cemetery. The plane sustained moderate damage and was towed to the airport. The highway was closed briefly.
