WASHINGTON – The ransomware attack on the global meat-packer JBS came from Russia, the White House confirmed. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that the United States had contacted Russia’s government. “The White House is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals,” Jean-Pierre said. The FBI was investigating, she said. She did not say how much ransom was demanded or whether it was paid. Among idled JBS slaughterhouses were several in the Upper Midwest. The attack followed one in May, also from Russia, on Colonial Pipeline. The Colonial attack crippled fuel delivery several days from Texas to Maryland. Colonial reportedly paid $5 billion for its computer systems to be unlocked.
