MINNEAPOLIS– The director of Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, Chris Knopf, gloated at a court decision this week against a state permit for the Polymet copper mine proposed near Babbit. “PolyMet has a long history of trying to cut corners to get around environmental protections,” Knopf said. He praised the ruling as a demonstration that “Minnesotans will not be tricked by a multi-billion dollar Swiss mining company.” At issue in the case was whether PolyMet’s mine could meet air-quality standards. It was the state Pollution Control Agency that had OK’d Polymet’s clean-air claims.
