WINONA, Minn. –Mental-health services for school children can be expected to grow exponentially in coming months, according to Jen Whetstone of Hiawatha Valley Mental Health. Whetstone, director of children’s community-based services, said the adjustment after Covid shutdowns and online alternative learning has created “a mental health tsunami.” In an interview on radio station KWNO, Whetstone said her agency’s free counseling is being beefed up in 20 schools across Winona, Fillmore, Houston and Wabasha counties. Grants and other funding streams underwrite the more intensive care, she said.
