MINNEAPOLIS – The state Republican chair, Jennifer Carnahan, says she never had a reason to suspect Anton Lazarro was anything but a gregarious, wealthy and faithful party door – hardly the sex-trafficker that the FBI says. In an interview on radio station WCCO, Carnahan gave this account of five years of experience with Anton Lazarro: “I met Mr. Lazzaro in 2016, I was running for State Senate in downtown Minneapolis. I door-knocked every high-rise in the city. His was one of the doors I knocked on. He didn’t answer. As a lot of people did, they reached out to me after. He was one of the people that reached out. When I decided to run for chair six months after that, he helped my campaign a bit, and then became a major donor to our party shortly thereafter. I did have a political friendship with him.” It’s unreasonable, she said, expect her to know the personal background of every contributor, of every person she meets. “Guilt by association is just wrong,” she said.
