CAMP DOUGLAS, Wis. – The Defense Department has chosen Volk Field at the Wisconsin Army Guard’s Camp Douglas as the deplaning point for Afghan refugees headed to Fort McCoy for resettlement. Factoring into the choice:
> A 9,000-foot asphalt, concrete and grooved runway that can accommodate large aircraft.
> The field is fenced off, which keeps operations secure.
> Transit to Fort McCoy is 25 miles.
The Army released video Wednesday of soldiers unloading refugees’ personal gear on Sunday, mostly shopping bags, duffel bags, tie-wrapped trash bags, and cardboard boxes. The only civilian video of the landing itself Sunday was shot through a chain-link fence a mile away
