WINONA, Minn. – Winona schools appear on the right track with a mix of classroom and online classes, Superintendent Annette Freiheit told the School Board. Freiheit acknowledged that state guidelines specify complete distance learning, but she noted a recent drop in average daily case increases. The classroom-online hybrid had been Freiheit’s recommendation to the Board in August based on advice from a group of local, county and state health officials. Families have had the option for their students to learn completely from a distance, and, Freiheit said, more than 100 students have done so. Under the Freiheit plan, seventh-graders and older are in a completely distance-learning format. Younger students are split into Group A students, who learn in classrooms on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Group B, who learn in the buildings on Thursdays and Fridays.
