WINONA, Minn. – The franchise restaurant Ground Round never revived sufficiently from the pandemic and is closing. Owner Tim Beier said the last day will be February 26. Also, he said, his own health has become a personal issue. The announcement was a surprise. Beier has been in a major remodeling that included adding a deli and a jazz music venue. In 2208 the Ground Round replaced the breakfast, lunch and dinner Beier’s restaurant that Butch and Beth Beier started 30-plus years ago. The Beiers featured one of best salad bars in town, but when  salad bars began going out of  o fashion they converted to a Ground Round franchise and dropped breakfast service. The Beiers retired and son Tim took over. Until the pandemic, Ground Round often had a full parking. Waiting lines were not uncommon.

No more signature strawberry lemonade. 405 Highway 14.

Beier: “With the challenges of the pandemic, and most importantly, the recent challenges I’ve faced with my personal health, my family and I have decided it is in our best interest to close.”

Country Kitchen

Besides their namesake restaurant, Butch and Beth Beier also operated the Country Kitchen franchise down the street on Highway 61. They sold, and the place became the current Winona’s Family Restaurant.
