STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The four Democrats seeking the party’s nomination for the WI-3 Congressional seat proclaimed their support for abortion as a woman’s right. At stake is representation in Congress from the western Wisconsin – a seat held for 20 years by Ron Kind of LaCrosse, who is retiring. Mark A. Neumann of LaCrosse said that abortion ought to be a matter of personal responsibility – not an intrusive government policy. Rebecca Cooke of Eau Claire said the issue goes beyond protecting reproductive freedoms to protecting gay rights. There was agreement too on curbing inflation. Said Brad Pfaff of LaCrosse: “We need to make sure we continue to focus on kitchen table issues, the issues that are impacting working men and women here in western and central Wisconsin. We need to do everything we can to drive down inflation.” Deb Baldus McGrath of Menomonie called for attention to the squeezed supply chain: “We need to make sure we can get product to market because we feed and equip the world.” The candidates are in the August 9 primary ballot to go against Republican Derrick Van Orden, formerly of Bay City, now Prairie du Chien.
