ST. PAUL, Minn. – Anglers are delighted at their walleye catchers on giant 200-square mile Mille Lake in central Minnesota. The catch was 68% more than last year and the biggest in five years, said state fisheries chief Brad Parsons. He said anglers fished for a combined 230,000 hours, exceeding 40,000 hours a year earlier. On weekends more than 1,000 boats showed on aerial photos. Parsons said the May stats were especially impressive considering that anglers last year could keep one walleye but this year it’s all catch-and-release. Why are walleyes biting?? Parsons said that the fish are hungrier than usual because they went into the winter undernourished.
