FOUNAIN CITY, Wis. – Merlin Sutter, 96, a Trempealeau Valley farmer who sold seed in his later years, died at home. He was a 1944 graduate of Fountain City High School. He attended class reunions every two years and once hosted the occasion at his farm. He was a School Board and Farm Bureau member. He sometimes told of a post-Word War II humanitarian mission to Poland to deliver livestock. The sjx-week voyage turned into four months when the ship became ice-bound in the bay. He remembered how well people treated his shipmates even having so little themselves. Later, 1953 to 1955, he was in the U.S. Army in Europe.
