ST. PAUL, Minn. – State highway crews are taking down deer crossing signs and not putting any more up. Why? The Minnesota Transportation Department cites research that the signs don’t reduce deer-vehicle collisions. What causes the collision? The agency blames:
> Deer herd population, migration and location.
> Roadside vegetation.
> Curvy and hilly roads and darkness.
> Inattentive driving and speeding.
Sign of the past. A study says deer accidents will happen anyway. According to insurance industry data, the state had 42,000 insurance claims for animal-related crashes in 2021.
