HIBBING, Minn. — The Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota, Jason Lewis, underwent emergency surgery for a severe internal hernia after a painful attack. His campaign manager, Tom Szymanski, said Lewis’ condition could have been life-threatening if not treated quickly. Szymanski called the surgery successful. If Lewis continues on a positive trajectory, doctors anticipate that he will be released from the hospital in the next couple of days, Szymanski said. When Lewis might resume campaigning was unclear. The election is eight days off. Lewis, a former member of the U.S. House, has been lagging behind Tina Smith, the Democratic incumbent.
