ROCHESTER, Minn. – Six people and a pet escaped a smoke-filled house without injury in a residential block of southeast Rochester just after dawn. Firefighters arrived in near-zero temperatures and spotted light smoke but had no idea where the fire was. They broke inside to find heavy smoke and zero visibility but finally located the fire in a basement bedroom. The Red Cross took in three adults and three children and the pet. The fire was in the 1600 block of 8-1/2 Avenue Southeast.
