MEDFORD, Wis. – An angry mother bear burst through a patio door of a house and mauled the husband wife inside. Their injuries were sustainable. During the attack the man retrieved a rifle inside the house and shot the bear dead. Taylor County deputies said they were summoned to Castle Road west of Medford about 11 p.m. The man and woman said they had noticed the bear outside at a bird feeder. They opened a window and yelled for the bear to scram. The bear turned and charged through the glass patio door. The woman grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the bear. The husband got to a rifle and shot the bear dead. They were treated for bites and bruises at a hospital and released. The bear, deputies said, was was an adult female. A cub was seen running off as the mama had charged the house. Two kids in the house were asleep at the time.

Dead where she fell. The attacker was a black bear common in the North Woods. Adult females typically are 200 pounds. Like all bears, mothers can be ferociously protective of cubs.
