DULUTH, Minn. – A Duluth woman discovered a black bear has found a hibernation spot in a deep tunnel under her front porch. It’s not the porch that Jeanette Anderson normally uses. She wasn’t aware of her winter tenant until a neighbor saw the bear crawl into the hole that leads under the porch. Now what to do? The state wildlife agency suggested flooding the den with water or using an air horn to scare the bear out and away. Anderson doesn’t like the options. She’s decided to let the bear stay. In the spring she will fill in the two-foot entrance to the tunnel. For now, before winter fully sets in, the bear emerges at night and scavenges Tisch Creek neighborhood trash cans on the North End. It appears to like pizza scraps.

Black bear. Typically 100 to 300 pounds.
