ST. PAUL, Minn. – A Brainerd bow-and-arrow hunter will go to prison for killing a bear at a garbage dump and then sawing off its head as a trophy and leaving the carcass to rot. James Stimac, 39, was sentenced to 15 months by federal Judge Susan Richard Nelson. The bear was killed on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, where the tribe doesn’t allow nonmember to hunt. The evidence against Stimac included social-media photographs with the 700-pound carcass. What did he do with the sawed-off head? He took it to a taxidermist.

Dubious trophy. Hunter’s undoing was posting triumph over bear online.
