HOMER, Minn. – The historic Bunnell House, operated as a museum by the Winona Historical Society, opens Friday for the season. The hours: Fridays and Saturdays 10 to 4 through August. Admission: $3 to $5 and free to kids under 7 and younger.

Willard Bunnell, a Great Lakes steamship captain and adventurer, fled the law in a dispute over some silver coins in the 1850s. He built a house overlooking the Mississippi River in present-day Homer. It is thought to the first permanent house in Minnesota south of ST. Paul. Bunnell trapped and traded fur. The house is a simple board and batten structure of unpainted eastern white pine .It is in the Gothic Carpenter style with triangle-peaked windows and shutters. Features include a two-story veranda and a flat-roofed rear wing. typical of architecture in the Ohio and Lower Mississippi valleys.
