SLATER, Iowa –A backing car struck four parade-goers and dragged them several feet, killing one, as a Fourth of July parade was wrapping up. Killed was Mary Nienow, 59, of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Two other women, 67 and 59, both from Huxley, Iowa, were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. A 6-year-old child was airlifted 30 miles to a Des Moines hospital. Police said other oarade-goers rushed to the accident and lifted the car, a 2007 Hundai Sonata, to free the people underneath. The State Patrol said the victims were walking on the street after the parade had passed. The vehicle that hit them had been parked on the same street. The 75-year-old woman driving the car apparently lost control and backed over the victims, the Patrol said. Slater’s holiday festivities, 100 miles south of the Minnesota border, typically draws 6,000 people from near and far.
