WINONA Minn. – The City Council approved $250,000 for aesthetics to make Mankato Avenue a second grand entrance to Winona from Highway 61, aspiring to the tree-lined Huff entrance across the Lake Winona causeway. The project piggy-backs on a largely state-driven safety project for roundabouts at key intersections on Mankato, which carries State Highway 43 traffic. The city aesthetic part of the Mankato project includes trees along the boulevards and boulders in the median. The aesthetics will run $200,000 plus $50,000 from state aid. Construction is scheduled begin in March.

Roundabouts
The Mankato roundabouts will be at:
> U.S. Highway 61, at the Rivers hotels and Kwik Trip.
> Riverbend Road, at Burger King and WNB bank.
> Parks Avenee, at Lake Winona adjacent to the hospital.
> Sarnia Street, the 90-degree westward turn of Highway 43 along the lakeside Sarnia parks.
The beautification project doesn’t extend beyond Sarnia and the Canadian Pacific rail crossing to the shabby neighborhood around Washington-Kosciusko school, the Winona Athletic Club, the Mankato Bar and, the abandoned Mulyck Funeral Home the levee.
