WINONA, Minn. — Back coaching boys soccer at Winona High School is Pete Wakins, this time as head coach. He was a volunteer assistant last year. Also, he coached the team in 2020. Sports has been a core in Watkins’ career. Most recently he was a sports marketing strategist for Fastenal to promote the company brand. Earlier he coached at Saint Mary’s University and Aurora University in Illinois. He also served as the women’s head coach at Ferris State in Michigan and Northwestern State in Louisiana. At Winona High this time he replaces Oscar Uribe, who stepped down after three seasons. In 2022 Watkins was elected to a four-year term on Winona School Board. About the season ahead he noted the assistant coaching staff is back and so too a “solid nucleus” of senior and juniors.
