WINONA, Minn. – Although he wasn’t physically in the driver’s seat, a Winona man was charged with criminal vehicular operation of a vehicle in a three-car collision near the Third Street bar district. This was about 2:20 a.m. As police pieced together what happened, Carson James Dale Sanvik, 20, was in the front passenger seat and drunk and fired up. To settle an argument, he reached over and grabbed the steering wheel, in effect commandeering control. The vehicle scraped two parked cars, both unoccupied. This was at Fourth and Main streets. Nobody was injured, including three or four people in the car with Sanvik. Damage to the vehicles was severe. Sanvik was booked for criminal vehicular operation. He was booked also for driving while intoxicated. Police described Sanvik with bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and an unmistakable alcohol odor. A formal charge of drunken driving was delayed pending the results of a blood test from the state crime bureau.
