LEWISTON, Minn. – Opponents of Daley Farm’s proposal to triple its dairy herd knocked on doors throughout Winona County and left hundreds of hang-signs on door-knobs. The message: Please sign a petition to the County Board to stand by its original decision against the Daley expansion. In short: “No CAFOs,” which is legalese for “concentrated animal feeding operations.” The Daleys propose adding 3,600 cows to their herd, far more than county rules allow without a variance. The Land Stewardship Project, which opposes factory farming, organized the door-to-door campaign. The doorknob hang-signs included handwritten messages. One message, penned by LSP member Karen Ahrens, said: “Maintaining our current animal cap is vital to our health and future.”

LSP leader Sam Streukens emphasizes in the doorknob-hangerd that maintaining  caps on livestock size is not anti-farming: “Winona County is an agricultural community. This is an asset from St. Charles to Weaver to Nodine. For those of us who live in Winona, we support local famers, and they support us. From sequestering carbon that mitigates climate change, having a reliable source of healthy food, and treating animals and the environment with dignity, we care for each other and our community.”
