SISSETON, S.D. – A tribal leader who helped organize the annual Great Dakota Gathering in Winona, Danny Seaboy, died of the coronavirus. He was 74. Beginning with the first Winona gathering in 2004 he was a regular participant in reconciliation talk circles, Native dancing and sunrise ceremonies. He traveled throughout the United States and Canada on the “powwow trail,” as he called it, with a consistent message of reconciliation between his people and “hunka” descendants of white settlers. He was called “Dakota Dan” but also took pride in his Wahpekute name: Inkpa Duta or “Red Tip.” He held a degree in accounting. He loved the Dakota language and was a spiritual leader for his people. He was a composer whose works are prominent in the tribal repertoire.
