OAK PARK HEIGHTS, Minn. – At the state’s most secure prison, Oak Park Heights, the cell of ex-cop Derek Chauvin is small. It is equipped with only a bench with a mattress pad, a combination toilet and sink, and a tiny shower. This is where Chauvin will spend 23 hours a day now that he’s. been convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd. He is allowed necessities like clothing, toothpaste and soap, as well as a pen and paper. He can have books, magazines and newspapers if the warden approves. The cells are monitored by cameras. Guards are expected to look in on prisoners every 30 minutes to make sure they are there and healthy. He will be subject to a monthly mental health interview.

Max security
Security is controlled from a two-story glassed-in “bubble” from which guards open and close cell-block doors as well as doors to a common area up one floor. Cell blocks are separated by steel “sliders” that isolate each section. Outside but within the prison walls is an exercise yard. Armed guards patrol the yard atop the walls. Beyond the prison building is a field surrounded by a double set of fences topped with razor wire. No prisoner has ever escaped
