WINONA, Minn. – The city is hemmed in without sufficient land for continued industrial expansion over the coming decade, said Lucy McMartin director of Winona Economic Development. In an exhaustive article by Chris Rogers in the Winona Post, McMartin said scattered plots of vacant industrial land are exist but aren’t necessarily for sale. Of these commercial lots, she said, many are not zoned for industrial development. Also, squeezed between the river and the bluffs, the city cannot simply sprawl outward. Rogers asked: Where will the next Enlightened Equipment go? The next Peerless Chain? Or the next Fastenal? Dan Arnold, of the Winona Area Industrial Development Association, said: “If we don’t have available ground for future businesses, it’s going to stagnate.” Arnold sees a 20-year window before industrial expansion stalls for want of space.
