FRONTENAC, Minn. – A sheriff’s deputy in an airboat rescued the driver of a pickup that broke through the ice on Lake Pepin. The deputy just happened 6o be the vicinity, off Methodist Beach. The incident just before 11 a.m. The Army Corps of Engineers has measuredd ice as much as 23 inches on Lake Pepin, but the thickness is uneven on the 46-square mile lake.

Ice can support airboats. But not 4,000-pound pickups. At least not everywhere on the Mississippi River lake.
