ALMA, Wis. – Several families were displacedby a fire that erupted in a three-story house one street up the bluff from the State Highway 35 main drag through town. The American Red Cross helped the families find other shelter in the freezing weather. Firefighters evacuated residents from two neighboring homes on the tightly packed street. Those houses were saved. The fire, at 103 North Second street, was reported about 12:30 p.m. Fire crews Durand, Fountain City, Mondovi, Nelson, Pepin, Tri-Community, Waumandee-Montana-Lincoln, and Pepin helped battle the fire, as did crews from across the river in Wabasha and Kellogg. The Fountain City Kwik Trip fed the first-responders. The cause of the fire was not immediately confirmed.
