SOMERSET, Wis.  – Five young people were stabbed viciously in their torsos, one mortally, at the end of an outing on tubes down the Apple River. Two of the others were hospitalized in critical condition, two others in serious condition. The incident was about 3:45 p.m. at Sunrise bridge of State Highway 35/64 downstream from  Somerset. The bridge is where many tubers end their float trop down the river. The stabber fled with His knife, witnesses said. Witnesses gave police a photo of the assailant. They arrested 52-year-old Prior Lake, Minnesota, man without incident at Village Park upriver in Somerset.

Busy tubing. The Apple Rive, within an hour of the Twin Cities, is crammed with tubers on summer weekends.

Serious midsection penetrations

The victims, some of whose names were not released immediately by Sheriff Scott Knudson:

> Isaac Schuman, 17, of Stillwater, a high school junior, who was dead on arrival at Lakeview Hospital 11 miles away in Stillwater.

> A man, 22, from Luck, Wisconsin.

> A man, 20, from Luck, Wisconsin.

> A woman, 24, from Burnsville, Minnesota.

> A man, 22, from Elk River, Minnesota.

Two were airlifted to Regions Hospital 30 miles away in St. Paul. Two were taken by ground ambulance to Regions.
