ST. PAUL, Minn. – As expected, Attorney General Keith Ellison won the Democratic primary election for a spot on the November ballot. His Republican opponent will be corporate lawyer Jim Schultz. In the GOP primary Schultz defeated Doug Wardlow, who narrowly lost to Ellison in 2018. A major issue this timehas shaped up to be public safety. Schultz has called Ellison “incredibly reckless” on policing. Indeed, crime has risen in Minneapolis, as in other major U.S. cities, in 2020 and 2021. Ellison has been attacked for his long-time support of abortion rights. He angered conservatives last month by declining to appeal a recent ruling by a state judge who declared most of Minnesota’s restrictions on abortion unconstitutional. In the Democratic primary Ellison won 89%. In the GOP primary Schulz won 53%.
