MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate to challenge two-term Republican incumbent Ron Johnson in November. Neither of them had a serious challenger. Barnes took 78% of the Democratic vote, Johnson 85% of the GOP vote. The November race appears to be litmus test over Donald Trump’s hold on the state Republican party. Amid a lot of confounding positions, Johnson is known mostly as one of Trump’s most vocal supporters and also a conspiracy-inclined contrarian to facts and common sense. The national Republican party sees the race as crucial to regaining a Senate majority. If elected, Barnes would be Wisconsin’s first person of color in the Senate.
