WEST SALEM, Wis. — Ron Kind hosted his final corn roast event after 20 years in Congress. “Bitterweet,” the retiring member of Congress called the occasion amid live polka music, food and games at the LaCrosse County fairgrounds. To well-wishers and fellow politicos, Kind said:

“You know, people need to realize that democracy is on the ballot this year. We have a national party that thinks the only legitimate election is the one that they win, and we can’t have that in a democracy, and that’s why I think we have a very strong slate of Democratic candidates who are going to put people above politics every time.”

Among those chewing into corn cobs:

> Governor Tony Evers.

> U.S. Senate candidate Mandela Barnes.

> WI-3 Congressional candidate Brad Pfaff, who seeks to succeed Kind.
