MADISON, Wis. – A Republican-controlled Wisconsin Assembly committee approved a bill to ban public schools from teaching concepts such as systemic racism and implicit bias. The vote was on party lines. The bill next goes to the full Assembly. The Assembly too has a Republican majority. The bill is boilerplate from national right-wing organizations to forbid classroom explorations of white supremacy as a pivotal in U.S. history. In committee, Democrats argued for honest history, not a convenient amnesiac white-washing. If the bill makes it through the Assembly and Senate, Democratic Governor Tony Evers, a former state schools superintendent, is expected to veto.
