ST. PAUL, Minn. – Among unresolved policy issues in the new state budget agreement is Governor Tim Walz’ clean-car project. The governor wants to use the state natural resources part of the budget to help accelerate Minnesota’s shift to electric cars. So far, the Walz plan has been only a latent although simmering problem for Republicans ,who generally are less environmentally sensitive than Walz, a Democrat. To pressure Walz, some Republicans in the GOP-controlled Senate have threatened to refuse to approve any natural resources spending, in effect shutting state parks just before Independence Day weekend and blaming Walz unless he backs down.
