WASHINGTON – The Senate voted unanimously to pre-approve $2.7 billion to continue a program to address injuries to the Great Lakes environment over the next five years. Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, who championed the legislation, called it “critical to addressing the threats that face our beloved Great Lakes.” In its 11-year history the initiative has supported y 5,500 projects on toxic industrial pollution, invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels, harmful algae, and loss of wetlands and other wildlife habitat. The bill, which the House passed 10 months ago, awaits President Trump’s signature. The initiative has survived Trump’s gutting of the Environmental Protection Agency in recent budget battles.
