WASHINGTON – without the hoopla of a formal declaration of candidacy, Congressman Jim Hagedorn of southern Minnesota has been drumming up donations for election to a third term. Hagedorn reported $610,000 in donations for the quarter ending June 30. The report, filed with the Federal Election Commission, swells his war chest for the 2022 campaign to $1.8 million. There have no rumblings of a Republican primary challenger to Hagedorn, but he has vulnerabilities. These include recurrent kidney cancer, a financial scandal with office expenditure, an undistinguished record in Congress, and the possibility that his allegiance to Donald Trump could sour. Hagedorn twice has defeated Democrat Dan Feehan but barely. Freehan has not announced his intentions for 2022. Before that, in 2014 and 2016, Hagedorn was defeated by incumbent Democrat Tim Walz.
