EAU CLAIRE, Wis — The utility Xcel Energy will be using helicopters to examine power lines in western Wisconsin through mid-August. The craft will be within 50 feet of lines to identify structural issues and dangerous proximity with buildings and trees, Xcel said. Involved are 7,000 miles of high-voltage lines from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Eau Claire in Wisconsin and south to LaCrosse.
