ST. PAUL, Minn. – With New York losing a U.S. House seat to Minnesota in the 2020 census by only 89 people, a lawsuit over the count can be expectedSuch is the view of Peter S. Wattson, former Minnesota Senate counsel and retired redistricting attorney. Wattson noted that Massachusetts once sued over 435 people, and North Carolina over 856. Both challenges lost. Time will tell whether New York sees any chance in a legal challenge to get back its 28th House seat. Lawsuit or not, Wattson doesn’t see much to worry about. Minnesota’s census data probably is more accurate than New York’s because the state had a self-response rate. he said.
