WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate voted 51-49 against strengthening Roe v. Wade abortion protections. The action was designed by pro-choice choice Democrats, a minority in the Senate, to smoke out anti-choice Republicans —  on the record and publicly — on where they stood on abortion. Democrats saw their insistence on the vote as a litmus test against Republicans up for re-election in in November, including Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Polls show Americans overwhelmingly pro-choice.
