DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa companies with 25 or more employees are required to provide a notice to the state Workforce Development Department about lay-offs. But the Iowa-based Hy-Vee grocery chain, which fired hundreds of headquarters staff this week, has not filed any report. Coincidentally the Iowa Legislature has just cut unemployment benefits from 26 weeks to 16 weeks. Whether Governor Kim Reynolds will sign the legislation remains to be seen. Earlier Reynolds has talked about reducing the state unemployment system from a “safety net” to a “hammock.”
