MINNEAPOLIS – As Derek Chauvin followed along intently, Judge Peter Cahill addressed the jury and recited the homicide laws for which Chauvin has been on trial the last three weeks. The options for a guilty verdict, Cahill said, were:
> Second-degree murder, punishable by 40 years imprisonment.
> Three-degree murder, 25 years.
> Second-degree manslaughter, 10 years.
A verdict of innocent would be warranted if the jury concludes that Chauvin acted properly within his lawful authority as a Minneapolis police officer.
