WINONA, Minn. – The Kwik Trip convenience store chain is eyeing the old Lincoln School site at the busy Huff and Sarnia intersection to replace its current cramped store across the street. The old school site has been used for 10 years as a Winona State parking lot. Dax Connely, Kwik Trip real estate manager, said the deal is far from done. For one thing, he noted, the City Council would need to rezone the new site. Connely acknowledged there could be neighborhood resistance to expanding the Huff Street business district toward the quiet residential Lake Winona neighborhood.
Kwik: Bigger, better
Kwik Trip envisions an expanded store with 20 fuel pumps on the southeast corner of Huff and Sarnia. With the entire city block, the company says, there would be more room for cars to enter and exit safely. Also, a larger store would better serve local people for gas, as well as college students who need a quick meal or a week’s groceries.
