WINONA Minn. – Thick smoke greeted firefighters at an apartment building in the 100 block of West Second Street, promoting a call for all off-duty firefighters to mobilize. The fire turned out less serious than feared. In a small lower-level laundry room, firefighters found clothes afire on top of a dryer, which was still turning. The fire was extinguished quickly while a check was made to be sure that the building had been evacuated. Yes, every tenant was outside and accounted for. This was about 6 p.m. The state fire marshal was called to investigate how the fire started.
